Blacked out, ceramic-bezeled and built around an automatic chronograph, the Mido Ocean Star Chronograph 44mm is the most assertive member of the Ocean Star family. It is aimed at the wearer who wants a dive watch with real stopwatch capability and a stealthy, modern finish.

The stainless steel case is treated with a black DLC coating, which gives it a deep, uniform finish, and the bezel carries a ceramic insert for scratch resistance. On the matte black dial, the chronograph registers are laid out cleanly with small seconds, a 30-minute counter and a date window at 6 o’clock. The movement is Mido’s Caliber 60, an automatic chronograph based on the ETA A05.H31, with a power reserve of around 60 hours, generous for a chronograph. Despite the pushers, the case is rated to 200 meters with a screw-down crown and solid engraved case back.

At 44mm and roughly 14.5mm thick it is a big watch, and it wears like one, balanced by a soft black rubber strap and matching black buckle.
