The host of OUTSIDE the DIAL was already a Zodiac fan coming into this review. A Zodiac x GiantMouse Super Sea Wolf is one of the coolest dive watches in his collection. This time he's wearing the Super Sea Wolf Pro-Diver (ref. ZO3552), and he makes a strong case that it's one of the best dive watches you can buy today.
The movement
The Pro-Diver runs on a Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1. It's a 26-jewel automatic, and it's COSC-certified as a chronometer. The SW200-1 is a proven workhorse that shows up all over Swiss watchmaking, so any good watchmaker can service it. The chronometer certification means it was tested for accuracy before it left Switzerland. He calls the result "almost fail-proof," a watch that will last a lifetime. With Zodiac's long history in watchmaking behind it, he's confident in every other part of the watch too.
The specs
- 42mm brushed stainless steel case
- Screw-down crown and caseback, 300m water resistance
- 120-click unidirectional bezel with a ceramic insert
- Double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating
- Three hands, no date
- Stainless steel bracelet
He sums up the layout as "no frills, all work," which is exactly how he likes a diver.
The clasp
A lot of dive watches have a fold-out wetsuit extension. Zodiac's clasp expands instead: both ends where the bracelet meets the clasp have some stretch, so the fit adjusts to your wrist. It's a clever take on a classic dive watch feature.
Easy to make your own
The Pro-Diver also looks great on a strap. Like most of his dive and field watches, he wears his day to day on a hook-and-loop single-pass strap. It's comfortable, and it's quick to adjust when he needs to.
A brand with real dive history
Zodiac's Sea Wolf was one of the original purpose-built dive watches of the 1950s. He points to the brand's deep heritage and its landmark contributions to dive watch design as reasons Zodiac belongs at the center of the conversation.
Where he bought it
Both of his Zodiacs came from Watch Gang, and he says buying them was easy and the price was great. His advice: pick up a Super Sea Wolf with the SW200 inside.
The bottom line
This is a COSC-certified Swiss movement with 300m of water resistance, a ceramic bezel and a clever expanding clasp, in a 42mm case from a brand with real dive history. The Super Sea Wolf Pro-Diver is a diver built to be worn hard and kept for a long time.
